On May 17, it was presented to the Lake County Bar Family Law Committee for approval, and then to the Board of Governors of the L.C.B.A. (Lake County Bar Association) for approval. If approved, it will be disseminated under the auspices of the court and the Lake County Bar Association.

Gary Schlesinger was appointed by the President of the Lake County Bar Association to chair a committee to organize and hold a candidate debate for the two candidates for Lake County states attorney and the two candidates for Lake County court clerk. these were open to the public.
Effective August 1, 2012, there is a new system of handling trials in the family division in Lake County. Gary Schlesinger was instrumental in representing the interests of divorce lawyers in fashioning the system to be more user friendly to the lawyers. This involved his speaking at four large meetings and being one of three lawyers who met with three judges at a final meeting to resolve differences and problems. The new system was announced by the Chief Judge of the circuit, Fred Foreman, at the beginning of July, 2012.

Gary was appointed to the Illinois State Bar Association Standing Committee on Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Action by Mark Hassakis, the president elect of the Illinois State Bar Association. This is the committee that is the liaison between the association and the commission. The commission is the agency of the Illinois Supreme Court that is in charge of registering lawyers to practice, keeping track of their continuing education requirements, and imposing discipline, if necessary. Gary was the chairman of this committee from 2000-2001.

The Illinois Legislature passed and the Governor signed a bill that was initiated by Gary through the Illinois State Bar Association Family Law Section Council. The bill, Senate Bill 100, makes it easier for child support recipients to collect the penalty from employers who fail to withhold child support after receiving notice to do so. This change is effective January 1, 2010.

Gary was invited to be a speaker at the Illinois Chapter of The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers continuing legal education annual seminar on Columbus Day, 2009. A previous engagement prevented Gary from accepting the invitation.
Similarly, the Legislature passed and the Governor signed House bill 2266 which Gary initiated through the Section Council. This bill expands the definition of visitation to include parenting time and joint custody for civil enforcement and criminal prosecution of unlawful interference with parenting time by the other parent. This was effective August 25, 2009.

On Saturday, May 3rd from noon to one p.m., Attorney Schlesinger was on WKRS Radio, 1200 a.m. in Waukegan, Illinois with Jack Taylor. He was the moderator and another lawyer to discuss grandparent visitation rights in Illinois. The show lasted one hour. The public was able phone in with questions.

The incoming president of the illinois state bar association, Jack Carey, appointed Gary to the family law section council for the 2008-09 bar year beginning July 1. The section council reviews and comments on and proposes legislation concerning family law topics to the Illinois legislature. The council also conducts several continuing legal education seminars throughout the state each year. Gary has been a presenter at these seminars. Lastly, the council publishes a monthly newsletter on illinois family law. Gary has had articles published annually in the last few years.
Incoming president Carey also appointed Gary, to the committee, on the attorney registration and disciplinary commission for the 2008-09 bar association year. Gary was the chairman of this committee in 1999-2000. This committee works closely with the registration and disciplinary commission concerning attorney discipline and Illinois supreme court rules governing admission to the bar, registration, discipline, continuing education and other matters affecting the conduct of attorneys in Illinois.

Gary and Michael both attended a continuing legal education seminar on juvenile court cases and the role of the guardian for the children. Both are now eligible to be appointed as guardians ad litem in juvenile cases in Lake County, Illinois. This ability and knowledge will help them represent parents and others in juvenile court.

On January 30, Gary was a court appointed mediator as part of a new program adopted by the Lake County family law judges. One morning a week a volunteer mediator, who meets certain training and experience requirements, will be sent cases by the judges to mediate on various issues such as parenting time and child support.

Gary Schlesinger attended the Illinois State Bar Association annual business meeting and seminar. I will be a member of the family law section council and the committee on the attorney registration and disciplinary commission for the next year. I was appointed to both of these by the incoming president, Irene Bahr. I will also be attending as a member of the assembly, the legislative body of the ISBA. I was elected 2 years ago to a three year term to expire in June 2007.

Gary Schlesinger attended the annual Lake County Illinois Bar Association Family Law Seminar in Savannah, Georgia. Mr. Schlesinger is a member of the planning committee for this seminar…and has been for the past ten (10) years. Mr. Schlesinger was one of the speakers. There were approximately eighty (80) lawyers, judges, mediators and child custody evaluators in attendance. This is the best attended Lake County Bar seminar each year.

The Illinois Supreme Court has mandated minimum continuing legal education requirements for Illinois Lawyers. Since 1974 Gary has annually exceeded the minimum now required. In every year beginning in 1974 Gary has been the presenter of at least one CLE seminar.
