As the new year approaches, many Illinois laws will take effect January 1, 2016. One law will aid those trying to escape situations of domestic violence. Sponsored by State Senator Steve Stadelman, the law gives victims up to 60 days to pay initial deposits on gas, electric and water bills at a new apartment or home.
Supporters say this will improve a victim’s ability to get to safety by removing one more obstacle victims face when attempting to flee an abusive situation. One of the significant issues that many victims encounter is coming up with the financial resources to establish an independent residence away from an abuser, so the additional time is crucial.
The legislation will also help area shelters, many of which operate over capacity at times. By transitioning victims to independent living arrangements more rapidly, they will be able to open-up availability for others in need.
