Another famous couple is going through divorce and using a unique way of describing their split. Singer and songwriter Jewel announced that she and husband Ty Murray are headed for divorce in a letter to her fans today.
Always the wordsmith, Jewel said that she and her rodeo star husband would be ending their seven-year marriage through “thoughtful and tender undoing.”
One can’t help but be reminded of actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay front man Chris Martin’s March announcement that they were ending their 11-year marriage through “conscious uncoupling.”
In her letter to her fans, Jewel also wrote that the couple plans to end their marriage “with love rather than malice,” and they will continue to be “dear friends and devoted co-parents” to their nearly 3-year-old son.
Sensitive and cooperative-sounding descriptions for divorce appear to be a growing trend among celebrities, which means average couples will likely start jumping on board soon as well.
Already, regular couples who want to end their marriages amicably have options available such as mediation.
Through mediation, a divorcing couple works with a third-party neutral who facilitates negotiations relating to property division, child custody, spousal support and all other matters to the divorce.
Mediation follows a collaborative process that is aimed at preserving a sense of respect between the parties, which is especially helpful for ex-spouses who must continue raising children together.
Another positive aspect about mediation is that it allows the parties to reach their own divorce settlement instead of placing the decision-making power with a judge who is largely unfamiliar with the family and their needs.
